About the Ryan White Program
Health Resources and Services Administration’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) provides a comprehensive system of HIV primary medical care, medications, and essential support services for low-income people with HIV. More than half the people with diagnosed HIV in the United States—nearly 562,000 people in 2020—receive services through RWHAP each year.
The Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act (Ryan White CARE Act) is the largest federally funded program in the United States for people living with HIV/AIDS. This act provides funding to improve the availability of and access to care for low-income, uninsured, and under-insured people affected by HIV/AIDS and their families.
The program is named in honor of Ryan White, an Indiana teenager who contracted HIV through a tainted blood transfusion. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1984 and was subsequently expelled from school because of the disease. White became a well-known advocate for AIDS research and awareness until his death in 1990. For more than three decades, RWHAP has worked to increase health equity, stop HIV stigma, and reduce health disparities by caring for the whole person and addressing their social determinants of health.
